We’re constantly bombarded with noise—whether it’s the sound of notifications on our phones, the chatter of daily life, or the endless to-do lists running through our minds.
With all this external (and internal) noise, it can be easy to lose touch with our inner voice—the one that guides, reassures, and helps us make sense of it all.
But when was the last time you actually made time to hear yourself think?
If you’re like most people, finding a moment of stillness can feel nearly impossible. Life is busy, chaotic even, and it never seems to slow down. But what if I told you that making time to hear yourself think is one of the most important things you can do for your mental, emotional, and even physical well-being?
As someone who’s recently gone through the terrifying experience of losing my hearing, I’ve come to understand the value of silence in a whole new way. After my hearing loss, I was left in a strange kind of quiet—yet even then, my mind was anything but silent. The constant ringing of tinnitus, the sound of my own heartbeat, and the robotic tone of my voice were constant reminders of the chaos within me. It was only when I deliberately began to make time for true quiet—mentally and emotionally—that I began to find peace.
In this post, I want to explore why making time to hear yourself think is so powerful, and I’ll share some unique tips to help you carve out those precious moments of stillness.

Clarity in Chaos When life is noisy—whether with literal sound or the noise of obligations and thoughts—our ability to think clearly becomes clouded. You might find yourself making decisions on autopilot, reacting instead of reflecting, or feeling overwhelmed because you can’t quite get a grip on what you really want or need. When you make time for quiet moments to hear your thoughts, you give yourself the space to gain clarity, align with your true priorities, and feel more in control.
Connection to Your Inner Self We often look for answers outside of ourselves, seeking validation or guidance from others. But your inner voice—your intuition—knows you better than anyone else. Making time to hear yourself think allows you to reconnect with that voice. It’s the one that will help you make decisions that align with who you are, rather than who you think you’re supposed to be.
Emotional Reset Silence isn’t just about calming the mind; it’s about healing the soul. When we’re caught up in the hustle, we often push aside our emotions, leaving them unprocessed. Taking time to sit with your thoughts creates a safe space for you to acknowledge your feelings, process them, and release any tension or unresolved issues that might be weighing you down.
Creativity and Problem-Solving Some of the best ideas and solutions come in moments of stillness. When your brain isn’t consumed with endless input, it has the freedom to wander, explore, and make connections that it wouldn’t otherwise have time to consider. If you’re stuck on a problem or need a spark of creativity, making time to hear yourself think can unlock those hidden gems of inspiration.

Now that we’ve established why it’s so important to hear yourself think, here are some tips to help you create the space for this practice in your daily life:
Practice “Quiet Mornings” One of my favorite ways to hear myself think is by having a “quiet morning” routine. Before the world wakes up, I take time to sit in the stillness of the early morning. This is when my mind is clearest, and I can truly tune in to what I’m feeling and thinking. Whether you meditate, sip your coffee in silence, or simply watch the sunrise, starting your day with a quiet moment sets the tone for a more centered and mindful day ahead.
Schedule “Silent Sessions” Just as you would schedule a meeting or appointment, set aside dedicated time each day for a “silent session.” This can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as an hour, depending on your schedule. During this time, turn off all distractions—phones, TVs, music—and simply be with your thoughts. Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted, and allow yourself to just think, reflect, or even sit in silence. It might feel strange at first, but over time, this practice will become one of the most grounding parts of your day.
Take “Mental Walks” Going for a walk without any specific goal or distraction (no phone, no music, no podcasts) is an excellent way to create mental space. As you walk, allow your thoughts to flow naturally. Walking itself is a great way to clear your mind, but it also encourages creative thinking and problem-solving. If you live near nature, even better—being in a natural setting can amplify the benefits, as you take in the sights and sounds of the environment while your mind unwinds.
Practice Mindful Journaling Journaling is often used as a way to get thoughts out of your head, but have you ever used it as a way to listen to your thoughts? Instead of writing with a specific goal, allow your journal to be a space where you can record whatever comes to mind. Let your thoughts wander, and write them down without judgment. Sometimes, seeing your thoughts on paper helps you realize patterns, concerns, or dreams you weren’t even aware of. It’s a great way to “hear” what’s really going on inside.
Create a “Brain Dump” Ritual If you’re someone who struggles to find mental stillness because you feel overwhelmed by everything on your to-do list, try doing a “brain dump.” This is a simple process where, at the beginning or end of the day, you write down every single thing that’s swirling around in your head. Don’t censor yourself—let it all out. Once it’s on paper, your brain will feel less cluttered, giving you the space to focus on more important thoughts and to tap into your deeper insights.
Unplug to Recharge One of the biggest barriers to hearing yourself think is the constant flood of information coming from our devices. Set boundaries with technology by designating certain times of day as “device-free.” This could be during meals, before bed, or first thing in the morning. Give your mind the break it deserves, and you’ll be amazed at how much clearer and calmer you feel.
In a world that never seems to stop moving, making time to hear yourself think can feel like a luxury. But the truth is, it’s a necessity. Your inner voice is a powerful guide, and the more you listen to it, the more aligned, creative, and fulfilled you’ll become.
Start small—give yourself just a few minutes of stillness each day—and watch how it transforms the way you think, feel, and live. Life might be noisy, but you always have the power to create your own moments of peace.
With love, Liz
